The root of all sufferings is the wrong cognition of the world and the resultant confusing behavior accordingly. To be relieved from pains completely, we have to continually correct prejudiced or wrong cognition.

One day, a Chan master named Wude was weeding in the garden.Three believers in Buddhism came over to him, bowed, and said, "People claim that Buddhism can relieve life’s pains, but how is it that we can’t feel happy even though we have been Buddhists for many years?”

The master lay down his hoe and replied, “It is not difficult to live a happy life, but you must know why you are alive.”

One of the three petitioners then said, "It is too terrible to be dead, so people need to live". Another said, “I work hard now to enjoy the family life with enough food and many offspring around in the future”. The last one said, “I have not so high  expectations as yours. I just want to live in order to  support my whole family.”

The master said with a smile,“You only think of death, aging and labor as burdens, other than ideals, beliefs and responsibility. It is no wonder you can’t find happiness. You must get tired without ideals, beliefs and responsibility.”

The three Buddhists retorted, “It is easy to speak of ideal, faith and responsibility, but these can’t satisfy our hunger.” The master asked again, “Can you tell me with what, then, you can find happiness?”

The answers from them were fame, love and money.

The master responded, “Why do some people with big reputations feel vexed, some with love also suffer from love, others with money feel worried all the time?”

The believers had no answers to the master’s question. Then the master added, “The ideal, faith and responsibility are not empty and meaningless things, but are reflected in every moment of life. Life will change only after the idea or attitude of life is changed. Reputation is enjoyable if it is used to serve the public; love is meaningful if dedicated to others; money is worthwhile if devoted to the poor.”

Generally people seek wealth, power, fame and high social status, which can be understood as greed. Greed is like a fierce psychological flame. The more we pursue these things, the more brightly the flame of greed burns, and the worse and worse pain we feel.

Plato once said, "Greed means real poverty while satisfaction is true wealth." In order to live a happy life, many people work hard to make more money to try to feed their greed, which never is satisfied, rather than seeking only what they actually need in life.

Shakyamuni Buddha told us that the root of all sufferings is the wrong cognition of the world and the resultant confusing behavior accordingly. To be relieved from pains completely, we have to continually correct prejudiced or wrong cognition. What we say and do is determined by our thinking. Good speech and action brings others and ourselves happiness, but bad things results in suffering. When we think for the benefit and happiness of others, we are relieved from disputes, bias and inflexible attitudes and attachments, and live a free, happy and joyful life.
