In November, at the holy land of Qinchuan, the sky is clear and bright and everything is in harmony. During this time the whole country gathers minds and concentrates spirits for the great national revival that leads to a new journey. Buddhism welcomes a great event. This is the Holy Buddha’s finger relic, which was unearthed in 1987 after having been hidden for 1113 years, and revealed to the public just 30 years ago. The Buddha’s finger relic, as the symbol of the Buddha, one of Three Jewels of Buddhism, is a holy item worshiped by Buddhists, which connects and unites Buddhists around the world with trust. It has great influence and a lofty position in Buddhism. According to the historical records, to unearth the under Palace of Famen Temple, "open once thirty years, then follows ages of fortune and people be in harmony ".

Now, both heaven and human beings rejoice at this great and special event. On the morning of Nov 23rd, 2017, the  “30th Anniversary Celebration of the Recovery of Buddha’s Finger Relic --- Illuminating the Past and the Present” was held at Famen Temple in Baoji. The event aims to show gratitude for the great merits of the Buddha, expound the perfect Dharma taught by the Buddha, adhere to the principle of Sinicization in religious development, advocate outstanding Buddhist culture, and improve global Buddhist exchanges. Thousands of people including venerable monks and masters, Buddhist worshipers and guests from all walks of life in more than 10 countries and regions such as Japan, South Korea, Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, and the cross-straits triangle, have participated. This event was mainly sponsored by the Shaanxi Buddhist Association, hosted by the Baoji Buddhist Association and Famen Temple, and directed by the Buddhist association of China.

Speeches were delivered respectively by Mr. Hui Jincai, Deputy Secretary of the Baoji Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Baoji Municipal Government, Ven. Master Xuecheng, President of the Buddhist Association of China and Abbot of Famen Temple, Ven. Bhikkhu Maitri Mahathera, President of the All Nepal Bhikkhu Association and International Buddhist Society Lumbini, Ven. Master Seonmughyeja Sunim, Jogye Order, in Jogyesa Temple, South Korea, Ven. Master Xinbao, Abbot of Taiwan Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Mr. Wei Zengjun, Vice Governor of Shaanxi Provincial Government, and Mr. Jiang Jianyong, Deputy Director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs. The celebration was hosted by Master Ven. Xiankong, the Monastic Manager of Famen Temple.

In his speech, Deputy Director Jiang Jianyong congratulated the Anniversary Celebration on behalf of the National Religious Affairs Bureau. He said that the recovery of the Buddha’s Finger Relic in the Famen Temple underground palace 30 years ago was a major and great event for the Buddhist community. It revealed a glorious long-lost period of history. Thousands of years ago, the placement of Buddha’s finger relic in Famen Temple bore witness to how Buddhism became embedded in the history of China and deeply integrated with Chinese culture, bore witness to the prosperity of Buddhism and the grand cultural prosperity of Chang An, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, and bore witness to the strong cultural cohesion and national integration of the Tang Dynasty. The recovery of the Buddha’s relic manifests the karmically predestined going out to the world of contemporary Buddhism and the cultural renaissance of China.

Deputy director Jiang Jianyong pointed out that the recovery of the Buddha’s relics and overseas pilgrimage activities have increased the influence of Chinese Buddhism abroad, enhanced the cohesion of Chinese culture, improved recognition of cultural identity, consolidated traditional friendships between the Chinese Buddhist community and those in Thailand and Korea, along with exchange and cooperation between Buddhist communities in the mainland and those in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Finally they have composed a new epic in friendly communication and exchanges between Buddhists worldwide.

Deputy director Jiang Jianyong hopes that the Buddhist Association of China, the Buddhist Association of Shaanxi province, and Famen Temple, take this event as an opportunity, lead the fourfold assembly of Buddhism, study hard and implement the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, implement the spirit of the National Religious Conference, continue to carry forward the patriotic traditions of Buddhism, firmly adhere to the direction of Buddhist Sinicization, endeavor to practice humanistic Buddhism, continue to open up a new realm of Buddhism Sinicization, further strengthen friendly communication and exchanges with foreign countries, and make greater new contributions in promoting Chinese traditional culture, in achieving the great revival of Chinese dream, and in the construction of a common destiny for human beings.

Ven. Master Xuecheng, the president of the BAC, gave the speech and said that the recovery of the Buddha’s relics have become a world renowned event. Not only has Famen temple attracted friends and Buddhist believers from all over the world to visit and worship, it has also built bridges of peace and friendship for our nation’s harmonious relations with neighboring counties as well as friendly exchanges across the straits between the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. In 1994 the Buddha’s finger relic was brought to Thailand for an 85-day worship assembly, in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand and the 50th coronation anniversary of the King of Thailand. It immediately created a great sensation in Thailand. “Both sides of the Taiwan straits share the light of Buddha”. In 2002, the Buddha’s finger relic was escorted by a delegation led by Ven. Master Hsing Yun to Taiwan for a worship ceremony spanning 37 days. This rare occasion threw the entire island into celebration with thousands flocking to worship the relic day and night. This record-breaking event marked the greatest nongovernmental ceremony in the history of Taiwan in terms of the scale, profile, influence, significance and the number of worshipers. It also contributed to unparalleled integration and unity between Chinese people. In 2004, the Buddha’s finger relic was brought to Hong Kong for worship, which was an unprecedentedly grand occasion touching the hearts of many. In 2005, the Buddha’s finger relic was escorted to the Republic of Korea for worship, thereby writing a new chapter in Sino-Korea relations and introducing a glorious page in the history of Buddhism for China and the whole world.

Ven. Master Xuecheng, president of the BAC, pointed out that this day was a truly great chance to be together with so many distinguished guests and friends to celebrate the grand event, all blessed with inconceivable merits and virtues, gathering at Famen Temple to hold the 30th anniversary celebration commemorating the recovery of Buddha’s finger relics and the discovery of the Underground Palace and Tang-Dynasty treasures, as well as to worship the Buddha’s Finger Relic Worship and hold the Blessing Dharma Assembly. More than 2000 years ago, Ashoka sent the Buddha’s finger relic to China, a fertile land. It was a grand fortune for our nation and our people. Since the unearthing of the Buddha’s relic and the Underground Palace, with the support of the fourfold assembly of Buddhists, Famen Temple has become a place of pilgrimage well-known both locally and abroad, a famous tourist attraction, and a base for academic and cultural research exchange as well as for the cultivation of talent.

He emphasized that Buddhism and Famen Temple made a great contribution and created wonderful culture in the history of China. Now in the new era of building a modern socialist country, we should make unrelenting efforts in researching the profound meanings of Buddhist doctrines, expounding the significance of modern times in the culture and history of Famen temple. We should follow President Xi Jinping’s initiatives and study deeply the cultural and spiritual meanings of historical relics, “bring cultural relics to life”, and thus make Chinese culture reach out to the world.

The ceremony received congratulatory messages from many Buddhist groups and organisations from China and abroad. The 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China, sent his best wishes in the following words: “The Great Chinese Dream Blesses All; Fortune Highroad Shines with the Light of Buddha”. In the ceremony, Shaanxi Famen Temple, Taiwan Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple and Hong Kong Po Lin Monastery formally established friendly relations. The agreeement was signed by Ven. Master Xuecheng, President of the BAC and Abbot of Famen Temple in Shaanxi, Ven. Master Xinbao, Abbot of Taiwan Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, and Ven. Master Jingyin, Abbot of Hong Kong Po Lin Monastery.

After the ceremony, Ven. Master Xuecheng President of the BAC, Vice president Ven. Master Pa Song Lie Long Zhuang Meng, Ven. Lama Hu Xuefeng, and Ven. Master Zengqin presided over the Dharma Assembly for the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Recovery of Buddha’s Finger Relic.

Secretary General Mr. Liu Wei and Vice Secretary Ven. Master Changzang from the Buddhist Association of China, and many guests participated this event.
