The Internet transcends time and space, features instantaneity and interaction, and can integrate the Buddha Dharma into our lives at every time and place. The Master believes: “My spiritual online charity, Internet + “Heart,” is to bring warmth to people’s hearts and positive energy to society.”

Ten years ago, Master Xuecheng started his personal blog online, and the media called him the “first Buddhist blogger.” Ten years later, as a member of the CPPCC and President of the Buddhist Association of China, Master Xuecheng has become even more enlightened.

“The mutual understanding of hearts and souls can still be realized in today’s Internet age,” said this Internet-using Master. “Buddhism is humanistic. It is inevitable for modern Buddhism to develop outside of the temples, get engaged in the crowd, edify the society and lead the culture. To widely promote the Buddha Dharma, we must take advantage of the contemporary language, culture and media.”

On his blog and Weibo, Master Xuecheng promotes Buddhism through words, comics and short films, and briefs the whole world on new trends in Chinese Buddhism. In 2011, Master Xuecheng started a multilingual Weibo that currently features 12 languages and has accumulated more than 18 million page views.

Interacting with his online “fans” is now a very important part of Master Xuecheng’s work. Throughout the whole year, every morning at dawn, he sits upright behind his computer, listening to all sorts of worries and confusions of his “fans.” “I pick and answer some typical questions.”

“Help others with no expectation, and every little bit counts; help others with strong vows, don’t give up because you lack strength, and only through action can we gain more strength. We should not only help others, but our own hearts as well.” This is how Master Xuecheng answered one of his “fans” who was confused about helping others on his Weibo.

Master Xuecheng says that some people feel lonely and alienated in modern society, and this leads to an increase of negative emotions.

“Spiritual charity can help people release the negative energy in their hearts and grow their confidence in society and life,” he says, “people should lift up their minds, and think more about positive things.”

He says the Internet provides everyone with a platform for reading, and is an important tool to improve the overall quality of the nation. But sometimes the Internet can also damage society and bring harm to people, so it should follow a sound development path.

With regard to extravagance and waste, violation of honesty and moral conduct and other negative social phenomena, Master Xuecheng encourages us to reflect on how to improve our overall ethical cultivation. “It is a fundamental quality for people to be filial to their parents, and loyal to their country.”
