When we meet someone who makes us extremely uncomfortable, then the real cultivation begins. Train an army for a thousand days to use for one moment. All our attainments from listening to and contemplating the teachings in daily life should be applied right here. Contemplate all the teachings you have heard and delve into what inspires you. This is the ideal opportunity to eliminate karmic obstructions, accumulate merit and gain wisdom, so we should not waste it by dwelling on worries.

Q: Master, I love a man so much that I can’t free myself. However he no longer likes me. I want to give up on him but always fail no matter how hard I try. Several years have passed, but my affection for him does not decrease even a little. I have recited various scriptures including the Ksitigabha Sutra, the Heart Sutra, the Great Compassion Mantra, the Mantra to Untie Karmic Knots, the Cundi Mantra and so on, but none of them are effective. My infatuation is as strong as it ever was. What should I do? Master, please instruct me!

A: Your mouth may be reciting scriptures, but your heart is reciting your obsession. When things are this way, even if you wear your throat out with recitation, what good can it do?   You need to see through to a deeper level in order to put this aside. You do not love that person. It is a phantom in your own heart that you love. Do not try to resolve this obsession by thinking it through. The more you think about it, the more attached you become. Try with your heart to grasp the Dharma, ponder over the Dharma and comprehend the Dharma. This obsession can only be alleviated through gaining wisdom.

Q: Greetings Master! I am nineteen years old. Within half a year I have experienced the loss of two loved ones. My maternal grandfather passed away unexpectedly in March and my maternal grandmother died of illness in May. Maybe it is because I lack experience, but I can’t rid my mind of the separation caused by death. My grandparents suffered a lot in their lifetimes, and their children failed to fulfill their filial duties towards them. Now I’m filled with remorse and grief. What should I do? I owe so much to them and it’s such a tragedy that I can no longer care for them or give them companionship!

A: Life is infinite. As the karma of this life ends, the next life starts over again. Practice the Dharma diligently and dedicate the merit to your grandparents with utmost sincerity, since this is a form of help and concern that goes beyond life and death. Treat everyone around you kindly, because at some point in the course of your infinite life, they have all been your relatives.

Q: Master, I pay homage to you! At my work there was a colleague who envied me and pushed me aside, so I chose to resign from my job. I began to experience anger and hatred for this colleague. What’s the remedy Master? I am grateful for your kind instruction!

Q: Master, I pay homage to you! I have changed my job recently. Since I entered the new work environment, I have been unfairly treated on a daily basis. The most unpleasant and tiring work is all given to me, and I get shut out and pushed aside.  Every day I go home with a belly full of anger. Shifu, what should I do? I ‘m really upset!

A: Take your work as an opportunity to learn and practice rather than an experience of being bullied and shut out. Once your mindset changes, your situation will change accordingly.
