Act according to your aspiration. In order to do so, you need to set up aspiration and goals; without aspiration, one simply follows his karma, affliction and habits.

Q: Greetings Master! Things have not been going well at work lately. I am falling apart and am feeling numb. All I see is what I am missing and I am losing faith in life. What can I do?

A: Nothing is permanent. Neither favorable nor unfavorable situations will last. Sometimes when you feel exhausted and cannot carry on anymore, the turning point may be just around the corner. Sometimes when you feel like riding on the crest of a wave, crisis may be lurking ahead. Regardless what situation you are facing, it is important to have a balanced mind, to aspire, to learn, and to work on the right causes.

Q: Master, one may learn some principles and philosophy of life through Buddhism study, but what does it really do? Most people understand the principles and rules, but can they overcome selfishness and put them into action?

A: The practice of Buddhist Dharma is not about lecturing principles. Instead, the purpose is to cultivate and shape our mind so that we are free from afflictions. If one takes Dharma as a philosophy, it is the academic study of Buddhism; if one believes in Dharma and practice it in everyday life, it is the action of practicing Buddhism.

Q: Greetings Venerable Master! What is your take on vegetarians? Is it a decision one makes when the conditions are right?  Is there a point when one would go vegetarian naturally and spontaneously, or should one make an effort to do so?

A: Act according to your aspiration. In order to do so, you need to set up aspiration and goals; without aspiration, one simply follows his karma, affliction and habits.

Q: Best to you, Master! It is difficult to feel reverence for the Dharma during my practice. Why is it? Would you please advise?

A: When you do not have a sound understanding of the three Jewels, there are many preconceptions in your mind that can hold back your practice. Take your time to learn and gain a deeper understanding. As you do so, the reverence will be cultivated; the more reverence you feel, the better you will learn. These two will facilitate each other.
