Born in Xianyou, Fujian in 1966, Ven. Master Xuecheng became a novice at Guanghua Monastery in Putian, Fujian under the seat of Ven. Master Dinghai in 1982. From then on he relied on Ven. Master Yuanzhuo in Buddhist study and practice.

 

Born in Xianyou, Fujian in 1966, Ven. Master Xuecheng became a novice at Guanghua Monastery in Putian, Fujian under the seat of Ven. Master Dinghai in 1982. From then on he relied on Ven. Master Yuanzhuo in Buddhist study and practice. 

He obtained his Master’s degree from the Buddhist Academy of China in 1991. In 2007, he was granted an Honorary PhD in Educational Administration from Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University of Thailand, followed by an Atisha Dipankar & Visuddhananda Peace Gold Award from the Bangladesh Buddha Kristi Prochar Sangha in 2010, and the Tripitaka Mahapandit (an honorary title of Doctor of Tripitaka) from the Sangha Council of All India Bhikshu Maha Sangha in 2011. 

Ven. Master Xuecheng is the head of multiple Buddhist groups: President of the Buddhist Association of China, President of the Buddhist Academy of China, Vice President of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, Abbot of Guanghua Monastery in Putian, Fujian, Abbot of Famen Monastery in Fufeng, Shaanxi, and Abbot of Beijing Longquan Monastery. 

Concurrently, he assumes responsibilities with various non-Buddhist organizations including: Member of the CPPCC Standing Committee, Vice President of China Committee on Religion and Peace, Vice President of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Humanities and Religion at Beijing Normal University, and Chief Editor of the journal Voice of Dharma
