Ven. Master Hsing Yun has observed that young people now are afraid of hard work. “But hard work is an education and a process. Making one’s way through adversity is necessary in order to become a better person”. He insists that each person must sow the fields of his own heart as true treasure is not in the outer world but in one’s heart. Each person must work for the welfare of society and humanity.

According to Taiwan’s Lianhe Wanbao, the second day of the Taiwan University Presidents’ Conference was held at Fo Guang Shan, where Ven. Master Hsing Yun made a special appearance to speak with the one hundred plus university presidents, whom he exhorted to attach greater importance to humanism in the face of over-rapid development of science and technology, mentioning the greater need for moral education and the uplifting effects of the humanities.  He made an appeal to the prestigious attendees- "More important than studying is learning how to be a better person. It is necessary to attend more to students’ understanding of humanism and their moral education.”

Ven. Master Hsing Yun stated that, after Fo Guang Shan established a total of five universities in Taiwan and abroad, he had realized the difficulties involved in running a university and how hard the work of university presidents was.  Having grown up in a temple without formal education, the 89-year-old Master now affirms that for a student, more important than studying is keeping Taiwan and humanity in one’s heart.

He said that selfishness and the lack of consideration for other people would make one more difficult to succeed. Moreover, in modern life one would depend heavily on other people, ranging from one’s parents, teachers, mentors, farmers and workers in all parts of society; hence the maxim, “Keep humanity in your heart”.

Hsing Yun also has observed that young people now are afraid of hard work. “But hard work is an education and a process. Making one’s way through adversity is necessary in order to become a better person”. He insists that each person must sow the fields of his own heart as true treasure is not in the outer world but in one’s heart. Each person must work for the welfare of society and humanity.
