From May 25th to Jun. 6, 1950, World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) was founded. Participants in this conference included many eminent monks across the world. The conference drafted WFB’s charter, chose a six-colored design for its flag, a Dharma wheel as its emblem, and the full moon day in mid-May as the Vesak Day (the Buddha's birthday).

From May 25 to Jun. 6, 1950, 127 Buddhism Masters from 29 countries gathered at Colombo, where a global Buddhism organization — World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) was founded.

Participants in this conference included many eminent monks across the world, such as Sangharaja from Cambodia, Tăng thống (meaning the general supervisor of monks) from Vietnam, Sojo from Japanese Soto school and leaders of major Buddhist schools in Sri Lanka.

The drafters of WFB’s charter were well-known scholars too, including Babasheb Ambedkar (the father of India’s Constitution) and Hon. U. Chan Htoon (Composer of Myanmar’s Constitution). Headquarter of WFB moved from Colombo to Yangon in 1958, then to Bangkok in 1969, which later became the permanent address for WFB’s headquarter.

The mission of WFB is to encourage Buddhists around the world to strictly follow the Buddha’s teachings and to spread Dharma, to enhance the unity of Buddhists, to enable communication and exchanges among different countries, to carry out social, educational, cultural and charitable events and to discuss the role of Buddhist in ensuring peace for the world.
