There are two teams in the Communication Department of Longquan Monastery: Animation Center and Longquan Voice Website (http://www.longquanzs.org).

Since its foundation in 2011, the Animation Center has designed and created a series of upbeat and inspiring works, including dough figurine animation, flash clips, and 3D animation. The dough figurine series, based on the dough figurine craft that existed in China for centuries, were first of its kind. By adding new techniques and substances to the traditional craft and introducing advanced technologies such as static frame animation, the Monastery created The Story of Xian’er, which now has a TV edition and stage edition. The flash clips, “Master Xuecheng Talks”, lasting for one minute each, was based on the comic “Dharma Talk at Jianxing Hall” (from the light blog and weibo of Ven. Master Xuecheng), and were meant to spread upbeat messages to the world. Besides, 3D versions of “Life is a big stage” (by Xuecheng) and “Don’t take me as a veggie” (dough figurine) have also come out.

The centre has created nearly a thousand cartoon works, which are widely circulated on the internet. The comic series, “Dharma Talk at Jianxing Hall”, are also published. The first of the series, Afflictions, Our Own Choice, were very well received since coming out in July 2014. Signings were held in ten cities, bringing new life to the publication and distribution of traditional art works. The second book To Let Go is to Gain, coming out on January 1st 2015, taught people how to let go, and provided comfort and sources of power.

Besides Dharma Masters, a lot of professional artists including teachers and students from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts as well as people from other fields devoted their time to creating these works. They worked very hard despite no compensation. All they aspired was to produce enlightening and healthy animation, carrying forward the philosophy of “Creation, Innovation, Inheritance, and Dissemination” proposed by Master Xuecheng. In 2013, the Centre participated in the Beijing International Cartoon Exhibition as the only religious participant, and in 2014 won the nomination for the “Golden Monkey King” Award in Hangzhou Cartoon Festival and “Golden Dolphin” Award in Xiamen Cartoon Festival.

The Longquan Voice Website, updated every day, publishes information on traditional culture. The work is led by Masters in the Monastery and carried out by volunteers. Some volunteers reside in the Monastery, while others stay at their homes; however, they work as a team, communicating via the internet to run the website. Working on pro-bono basis, everyone is fully committed to the website as part of their efforts in spreading the Chinese traditional culture and values.
