On May 17, 2015, twenty-four Geek friends from their Longquan Wechat group re-visited Longquan Monastery. The last part of the visit was a dialogue with Venerables Xianxin and Xianfan on blending the Dharma and such high-tech techniques as AI (artificial intelligence) and robots. Ven. Xianxin said, “It’s better if this kind of robot can view the world from the Buddhist viewpoint. It is really a beautiful dream, which attracts us to consider: how to create a robot who believes in Buddhism?”

As early as the beginning 2015, two young men who were unconsciously tied to Longquan Monastery created the idea of making a robot for Longquan. They are Song Yunfei (CEO of One Robot) and Yu Zhichen (CEO of Turing Robot).

On July 30, 2015, the first R&D discussion was held and robot researchers from all over China gathered at the Animation Center of Beijing Longquan Monastery. Everybody was inspired by the vision of the first robot monk ever developed in history and got ready to act.

The discussion finalized a task: robot monk Xian’er will be presented in the Animation Exhibition in Guangzhou on Oct. 3. In addition, they also decided on the robot monk’s main function: it will have the ability of speech interaction, visual sensing and autonomous learning; it will look like Xian’er, the little monk in the cartoons and it will be best at communicating Buddhist information to Buddhist devotees.

The 2015 National Day is the 10th anniversary of Longquan Monastery’s reopening as a religious place and also the birthday of Ven. Master Xuecheng. On this special day, Xian’er, the robot monk made its debut. Under the witness and anticipation of Ven. Master Xuecheng and thousands of the Sangha and the laity, the robot monk Xian’er had a man-machine dialogue that amused the audience with a simple and lovely girl.

It took us less than 3 months for the robot monk to come out on  National Day after we decided to develop it in July 2015. And we will develop Xian’er, the robot monk II and an online Xian’er in the future.

After the release of the robot monk Xian’er, it participated twice in the forum organized by AI Era. During the launching ceremony of AI Era Think Tank, experts of AI Era think tank specially mentioned the R&D of the robot monk Xian’er, regarding it as a pioneer among religious circles around the world and also a robot that carries the most Chinese characteristics.

One day robot monk Xian’er will understand the mystery of Buddhism and the secret of the human mind through deep learning and analyzing big data, i.e. thousands of Buddhist scriptures across modern and ancient times. It will follow Master Xuecheng to learn Buddhism. It will recognize every Buddhist devotee’s questions and answer them. At that time, the presently six month-old robot monk Xian’er will grow up into an eminent monk who has super machine intelligence.
